‘Rukhsaar - The Women of Substance’ by Devi Raghuvanshi being the eleventh novel by the author, I had a rather mixed review while reading the book. Perhaps I was expecting more complex storyline and diverse characterizations than what is offered between the covers. The title of the book is good and the book cover beautifully carries the feel of the theme. Good job done Literoma.

It’s a short novel of 100 odd pages so you can have a quick read of the book. The central plot reflects deep rooted societal realism and there is a vivid description of the lady Rukhsaar and the fights she had to embrace with time. The unconventional relationship of Rukhsaar and Sameer offers a deep impact on the readers.

The art of characterization is good. The characters are quite real and still exist in some parts of India. The character of Rukhsaar, her bold and outright personality brings a freshness in the concept of the typical notion of Indian women as a rather plain-Jane. That she is not put in a negative shade is a good relief and also breaks the stereotypes. We see the strength of her character in her conversations with in laws.

There is a space for improvement in the narrative technique and the language of the novel. The climax of the novel is good and the author keeps the pace till the end. Actually, the last few chapters draw the interest to the story.

My rating is 4*/5* and suggested to adult readers.
