One line review: A differentiator with class

The book starts with a dedication to author's mother followed by a quote by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. In fact that very dedication page sets the tone of Sabarna Roy's title 'Frosted Glass'. A mix of class and modernization. The book has 14 short stories and 21 poems, none of which are conventional rom-com-family drama type. Each conveys a message strong enough to make me think twice.

To quote him from some of his stories from the book,

"She is an architect of international repute and will be delivering a lecture on ‘Environment Friendly Habitation’ in the Town Hall in Kolkata, three days from today."

"Leila was obsessed with her ideas of an artisan city, restoration of Bishnupur temples and North Calcutta. She made extensive trips to Kumartuli, Ghurni, Bishnupur and North Calcutta."

"I’m coming to Kolkata after a very long time. In fact, this is my first visit after my return.”

"He had no news of Sanjay. Someone told him that Sanjay had left Calcutta soon after the seventh semester examinations were over, to attend a month long corporate training programme in Bombay."

"Three years ago, just as spring was coming to an end, a lethal virus invaded the city of Kolkata. It spared no one, causing high fever with aching joints."

"In a tiny rented flat in North Calcutta. I will give you the address and directions."

Author's love for Kolkata or Calcutta can be seen in all his books and this one too is not spared or shall I say cursed? But I am not sure why he used both the old name (Calcutta) and new name (Kolkata) in the same book so many times. Any one style could have been followed.

Overall, I love the fluent writing style of Sabarna Roy and being an engineer myself, many of them touch my techie soul too.

My rating of "Frosted Glass" will be 3.8*/5*.
